Resin Patios vs Porcelain Patios: Which is Best for Modern Gardens?

Over the last few years, outdoor spaces have become much more than just somewhere to sit when the weather’s nice. More homeowners are now treating their gardens as an extension of the home itself, which is why patio renovations have become so popular.

Two of the most common choices we get asked about are resin patios and porcelain patios.

Both can completely transform a garden, both give a much more premium finish than traditional paving, and both are a big step up from tired concrete slabs or uneven flagstones. But they each have their own advantages depending on the style of garden and how the space is going to be used.

What is a Resin Patio?

A resin patio uses natural aggregate stones mixed with a strong UV-stable resin to create a smooth, seamless surface.

The finished result is modern, clean, permeable, and low maintenance, which is a big reason why resin has become so popular in recent years.

One of the biggest benefits is the flexibility in design. Resin comes in a wide range of colours and stone blends, so it can work equally well with contemporary properties or more traditional homes.

Because the surface is seamless, it also gives a very clean and premium overall look.

What is a Porcelain Patio?

Porcelain patios use large paving slabs made from high-density ceramic materials.

They’ve become extremely popular in modern garden design because they create a sleek, architectural finish and are available in a huge range of colours, textures, and stone-effect styles.

Porcelain is particularly popular in luxury garden projects and outdoor entertaining areas because of its sharp, high-end appearance.

Which Looks Better?

Honestly, this mostly comes down to personal preference and the style of property.

Porcelain tends to give a more structured and contemporary look with sharp lines and defined slab patterns. It works especially well in ultra-modern garden designs.

Resin, on the other hand, creates a softer and more seamless appearance. Because there are no grout lines or individual slabs, the space often feels more open and flowing.

For larger outdoor spaces especially, resin can make the entire area feel cleaner and more unified.

Maintenance Differences

This is usually one of the biggest deciding factors for homeowners.

Both surfaces are relatively low maintenance compared to traditional paving, but resin generally requires less ongoing upkeep overall.

With resin patios, there are:

  • No loose stones

  • Very little weed growth

  • No pointing or grout lines to maintain

  • Easy cleaning with occasional washing

Porcelain is still fairly easy to maintain, but grout joints can sometimes collect dirt or develop algae over time, especially in shaded or damp areas.

That doesn’t mean porcelain is difficult to look after, but it usually requires a little more ongoing attention to keep it looking perfect year-round.

Which is Better in Wet Weather?

In the UK, this matters more than people think.

One of the biggest advantages of resin is that it’s permeable, meaning water drains through the surface rather than sitting on top of it. This helps reduce puddling and standing water after heavy rain.

Resin surfaces also tend to offer very good slip resistance, which makes them a popular option for:

  • Family gardens

  • Pathways

  • Outdoor seating areas

  • Areas around hot tubs or garden rooms

Porcelain can also be slip resistant depending on the finish chosen, but smoother slabs can become slippery if algae builds up over time.

Which Option is Better for Outdoor Living Spaces?

If the goal is creating a modern entertaining space, both options can work really well.

Porcelain often suits highly designed contemporary gardens with outdoor kitchens, structured landscaping, and luxury finishes.

Resin tends to work better when homeowners want a softer, more natural feel that still looks modern while being practical and easy to maintain.

It’s also particularly useful for larger areas because the seamless finish helps spaces feel bigger and less broken up visually.

What About Cost?

Costs can vary massively depending on:

  • Ground preparation

  • Existing surfaces

  • Drainage requirements

  • Size of the area

  • Materials chosen

In many cases, resin and porcelain can end up relatively similar in overall price once installation and groundwork are factored in properly.

The cheapest option upfront is not always the best long-term investment, especially when durability, maintenance, and appearance over time are taken into account.

So, Which Should You Choose?

There isn’t really a “wrong” choice between resin and porcelain. It depends on the look you want, how the space will be used, and how much maintenance you’re comfortable with.

If you’re looking for:

  • A seamless finish

  • Excellent drainage

  • Low maintenance

  • Modern kerb appeal

  • A surface that works well across large areas

Then resin is often the better fit.

If you prefer:

  • Sharp contemporary lines

  • Defined paving patterns

  • Luxury architectural styling

Then porcelain may suit your project better.
